Staying Safe During Hunting Season in Queens County  2025

Hunting season is underway in Nova Scotia, and that includes our trails, woodlots, and rural roads here in Queens County. Whether you're hiking, walking your dog, or managing property, it's important to stay informed and visible.

Key Hunting Dates in Queens County

Expect increased activity in wooded areas during these periods:

  • Deer  Archery & Muzzleloader : Sept. 8 – Dec. 13

  • Deer  General Season : Oct. 31 – Dec. 13

  • Ruffed Grouse: Oct. 1 – Dec. 31

  • Snowshoe Hare  Hunting & Snaring : Nov. 1 – Feb. 28

Sunday hunting is now permitted on 13 Sundays

This means weekend trail use may overlap with active hunting. Here are the confirmed Sundays when hunting is allowed:

  • October: 5, 12, 19, 26

  • November: 2, 9, 16, 23, 30

  • December: 7, 14, 21, 28

Safety Tips for Hikers and Dog Walkers

  • Wear bright colours, especially hunter orange, to stay visible.

  • Avoid hiking at dawn and dusk, when hunters are most active.

  • Stick to marked trails and avoid venturing into dense woods or unposted private land.

  • Keep dogs leashed and visible—orange vests or collars are ideal.

Safety Tips for Property Owners

  • Post “No Hunting” signs clearly if you do not permit hunting on your land.

  • Be aware that Crown land and private land with permission are open to hunting.

  • Expect increased traffic on rural roads and trailheads, especially on weekends.

  • If you manage trails, host guests, or maintain signage, consider updating notices to reflect active hunting periods.
